Franklin Covey Workshop

Ready, Set, Disrupt the Status Quo:  Changing a School’s Culture by “Rethinking” Leadership

Wednesday, October 5th 1:15 – 4:15pm in Grand Ballroom Salon 3-4
Presenter: Tom Osborne, Franklin Covey

Let’s face it – the tomorrow our current students will navigate is going to be vastly different from today.  It is time we heed Albert Einstein’s words of caution: The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.  Our thinking must change, but how?  What disruptive innovation can effect a change in thinking?  Are any schools achieving this?  What does it take to construct citizen leaders for the world they will experience as adults?  How can we prepare them to lead in this unknown?

Many schools “do” student leadership development.  Some do it well, some not so well.  But even those who do it well often fall short of the full impact it could have.  This session will draw on action research from about 3,000 innovative schools around the globe, schools that have embraced a disruptive innovation – a new way of thinking about and “doing” student leadership. They are scaffolding leadership instruction much as they scaffold reading and math instruction. As a result, students are continuously building global leadership capacity, and their school cultures are transformed.

At the roots of this new way of thinking about leadership are solid principles that are consistent with proven curricula, best practice instruction, and the standards set by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.  Having a common foundation means that transformation can happen without trauma, rather, with a healthy amount of disequilibrium.

Participants will come away from this session with:
  • A new vision of student leadership
  • A preview of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
  • A time to reflect on how they (personally) live the 7 Habits
  • A plethora of Ideas gleaned from schools that have changed their way of thinking
  • Key questions to use in exploring current practice
  • Key question to use in exploring how to disrupt current practice
